As we move into winter, you’re probably going to start using your home heating system on a daily basis to keep comfortably warm. This added wear and tear on the system makes it much more likely for problems to develop, compared to other seasons when you use it less. No matter what heating system you’re using, it’s a good idea to be able to recognize the signs that it’s in need of repair. Let’s take a look at ductless heating systems, and when you should call for repairs for them.
Loss of Output
If your ductless heating system is running, but doesn’t seem to be putting out as much heat as it should, you may have a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is a catch-all term used to refer to the chemical blend that heat pumps use to transfer heat between the home and the outside air. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will slowly drain the system of the fluid it needs to keep your home heated. This will manifest as a steady drop in output, followed by a host of other problems up to and including a full system breakdown. If you notice a drop in output, call for repairs right away.
No Air Circulating
If one of your air handlers isn’t blowing any air at all, it probably means that the motor is burned out. Air handler motors are placed under a lot of stress during operation. So they are equipped with lubricated bearings in order to lessen the friction. These bearings wear down over time, producing a grinding sound while the system is operating. If they aren’t replaced, the friction on the air handler will increase until it burns itself out. If you hear a grinding sound coming from your ductless heater, call for repairs immediately.
