Your air conditioner contains an air filter inside it, designed to protect the system from dust and debris that may harm it. While this filter is quite effective at what it does, it cannot remain in top operating condition without your help. If you don’t change your air conditioner filter every few months, you’re going to be setting yourself up for a whole slew of problems. Let’s take a look at what happens if you don’t change your air filter often enough.
The Evaporator Coil
Your air conditioner cools your home by evaporating refrigerant in a part called the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the air in your ducts. This causes the air temperature around the coil to drop, causing condensation to form on it. The constant flow of warm air from the ducts keeps the temperature around the coil from dropping too low, maintaining a delicate balance. The condensate drains out of the system through a drain pipe, and the operation continues until the system is shut off. That’s the way everything is supposed to work—but it gets thrown into chaos if your air filter is not changed or cleaned often enough.
If the air filter is not changed or cleaned regularly, it will become so clogged that it will cut off the flow of air through the system. This will cause the air temperature around the coil to drop below freezing, which will cause the condensate on it to form ice. While the system is iced over, it will not be able to properly siphon thermal energy from the air. The ice can also spread down the refrigerant line and cause problems throughout the system. This is why you need to change your air filter every few months.
