Be Watchful for These Signs Your AC Needs Repairs Over the Next Few Months

Winter is over, and the hottest season of the year is not all that far off. As you start to rely on your air conditioning system more and more over the next few weeks, you need to be extremely careful to watch for any signs that the system is in trouble. The faster you can identify problems with your air conditioner, the faster you can get it repaired and the better off the system will be. The best way to do that is to know ahead of time what warning signs to look for.

High Monthly Bills

The hotter it gets outside, the more you are going to use your air conditioner and the more it’s going to cost to run it from month to month. This should hardly come as a surprise. However, you should take notice if it seems like your monthly bills are rising for no apparent reason. That could indicate that your system is working harder than it should be to achieve its usual temperature changes. This could mean that you have a problem with a clogged air filter, low refrigerant levels, or just general wear and tear. Regardless of the specific reason, though, the symptom itself is an indication that you need to schedule a repair appointment as soon as you can.

Low Output

Somewhat related to the above warning sign, you should be vigilant for any indication that your air conditioner is not putting out as much cool air as it should be. Drops in output are typically the result of either a refrigerant leak or a malfunctioning air handler, though there are plenty of times when they are due to some sort of problem with the air ducts. You’ll need to have a technician look over the system to be able to tell for certain what the issue is. Low output is not something that should be ignored, so make sure that you have a professional examine your system if you notice it.

Leaking Liquid

There are two kinds of liquids that the air conditioner deals with: condensate and refrigerant. If you notice liquid leaking from the system, it is almost certainly one of these two. If it’s condensate, then it needs to be dealt with, but not right away. If it’s refrigerant, then it’s an emergency issue and needs to be corrected immediately. This is because refrigerant is the liquid that the air conditioner uses to actually absorb heat inside the home and release it outside. Without it, the system can’t function. Air conditioners recycle their refrigerant supplies instead of consuming them, which makes a leak an even more serious problem. If the leak is not fixed, the air conditioner will eventually break down.
