The Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump

Dec 27, 2021

Now is the time of year when homeowners start to focus on getting their homes ready for the hottest months of the year. For some, this means scheduling preventive maintenance to make sure their systems are ready. For others, however, it means replacing their old system entirely. If you are in the market for a new air conditioning system, you actually have a lot of options available to you. One of those options is a heat pump. Read on to find out more about how a heat pump system can benefit you this year.

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is similar to a traditional split air conditioning system in a lot of ways. However, there are a couple of important differences that are the source of many of its unique advantages. A heat pump operates by evaporating and condensing refrigerant to move heat back and forth, just like a standard air conditioner does. The primary difference between the two of them is that a heat pump contains a reversing valve. This part allows the heat pump to reverse the direction refrigerant flows through it, so that it can provide both heating and air conditioning functions. Most homeowners install a heat pump just for this reason, but it’s not the only advantage to using this type of comfort system.

Advantages

As we’ve already mentioned, the ability to act as both a heater and an air conditioner is a big advantage over normal air conditioning systems. Rather than spending more time and space on a completely separate climate control system, you can use a heat pump all year-round.

This isn’t something you’ll notice during the summer, but a heat pump is much more energy efficient as a heating system than traditional systems. This is because the heat pump doesn’t burn any kind of fuel to generate heat; it simply siphons thermal energy from the air outside the home and vents it inside. Not that there is much demand for heat in Florida, even during the winter. Still, if you’re going to use a heating system at all, why spend more money than you have to?

Other Considerations

The only real reason not to install a heat pump over a normal air conditioner is its tendency to lose efficiency during extremely cold weather. In sub-freezing temperatures, there isn’t enough thermal energy available in the air for the system to efficiently heat the home. Again, however, this is hardly something you need to consider in a place like Ft. Pierce. If you’re looking for a new air conditioning system, and you have the space for a split system, you should consider installing a heat pump in your home. You’ll pick up a lot of benefits you didn’t have before, and you won’t lose anything in terms of output or comfort.
