What to Do When Your AC Unit Is Not Cooling Your Home

It’s more than a little unpleasant to have your air conditioning system fail to cool your home on a hot day. If your air conditioning system doesn’t seem to be putting out cool air, there are a number of things you can check. You will likely need to call for repairs, but there may be a couple things you can do to solve the problem yourself. Read on to find out what to do when your air conditioner isn’t working.

Check the Thermostat

It may seem simplistic, but a surprising number of air conditioning problems can be traced back to an improperly set thermostat. Have a look at your thermostat and make sure that everything is set properly. If your thermostat is off, or doesn’t seem to be displaying the correct information, that might be the source of your problem. A malfunctioning thermostat will cripple any climate control system attached to it. If everything is displaying normally, though, then the problem is likely somewhere else in the system.

Look for Leaks

One of the biggest threats to air conditioning systems is refrigerant leaks. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid that it needs to operate. This will cause a steady decline in output, eventually culminating in a full-system breakdown. Look around the system for any signs of fluid dripping from it. If you notice a leak, be sure to point it out to your technician when they get there. The leak will need to be repaired, and any lost refrigerant replaced, before the system can be restored to healthy operation.
