Signs That Your Air Conditioner Is in Trouble

Air-Conditioner-RepairWe might be coming to the end of the worst part of the hot season, but plenty of us are still using our air conditioner on a regular basis to stay comfortable. If you’re using your air conditioner on a regular basis, it’s important that you be careful of any signs that your system is experiencing trouble. The faster you can catch any problems that are afflicting your air conditioner, the faster you can have them repaired and the better off your system will be. Read on to find out some of the more common signs that your air conditioner is in trouble.

Odd Noises

If you’ve had your air conditioner for a few years, then you probably know what it’s supposed to sound like when it’s operating. If your air conditioner suddenly starts to make noises that are out of step with what it normally sounds like, you shouldn’t ignore them. Strange noises are a common sign that the air conditioner is having some sort of problem. How severe that problem is, and what kind of problem it is, will depend on the sound the system is making.

For example, a loud grinding sound might mean that you have some sort of malfunction in the air handler. This is caused by the bearings in the motor failing, which in turn causes the friction on the air handler to rise significantly. Hissing and gurgling noises could indicate a leak in the refrigerant line, which should be looked at right away. Regardless, what is important is that you call for repairs as soon as possible.

Dropping Output

If your air conditioner isn’t blowing out as much cold air as it should be, or isn’t circulating much air at all, you should be concerned. Dropping output is a classic sign that the air conditioner is malfunctioning in some way. It’s possible that the air filter is clogged, preventing the system from circulating as much air as it should be. It’s also possible that, as mentioned above, a problem with the refrigerant supply or air handler is hampering the system. Make sure you have a professional examine your air conditioner if the output is lower than it should be.

Unusually Costly Monthly Bills

You should always keep an eye on your monthly utility bills, just in case they start to fluctuate in ways that they shouldn’t. If your monthly bills are rising beyond what should account for how much you’re using the cooling system, it means that the air conditioner is probably working harder than it should be. That could indicate any number of different problems. You’ll need to have a professional examine the system to determine the exact cause, however. Just don’t ignore it, because it might be a serious issue that could cause a permanent breakdown.
