Can I Actually Save Money by Replacing My AC?

air-conditionerWe’re pretty far into summer by this point. How’s your air conditioner doing? We’re going to guess that you’ve been putting it through its paces for most of the daylight hours over the last couple of months. All that demand places a lot of strain on the system, so it’s a good idea to be sure of yours. If you think your air conditioner might not be able to get you through the rest of the summer, you should consult with a professional about replacing it as soon as possible. It may seem like a big investment, but trust us when we say that it will save you money in the long run.

Monthly Bills

The more you use an air conditioner over the years, the more wear and tear you put on the system. Eventually, the AC will get so old and worn out that it will start to lose efficiency. As the ability of the system to cool the home declines, it will operate for ever-increasing periods of time in order to make up for the loss. That contributes to higher and higher monthly bills, until the system eventually breaks down permanently. If you install a new system, you reset the clock in terms of wear and tear. That can have a pretty big effect on the cost of your monthly bills.

Just as the slow march of wear and tear has an effect on the system’s efficiency, it will eventually start to cause issues that need professional repair. Parts will eventually begin to fail in greater frequency, as the air conditioner gets closer to the end of its life. Sticking with your old air conditioner at that point means that you’re basically replacing the system one part at a time, which is both expensive and unnecessary. It’s far better to install a new air conditioner than to spend so much money maintaining a failing one.

Modern Air Conditioning

Using an older air conditioner doesn’t just mean that the system is more worn out than a new one. It also means that you’re missing out on the improvements that have been implemented on the market over the last decade or so. Modern air conditioners are always going to be more energy efficient, have more functions, and generally be all-around better than those that were new ten years ago. If your air conditioner is 10–15 years old, it’s right around the maximum useful lifespan for the average system, anyway.

Even if there’s nothing obviously wrong with your system, there soon might be. Air conditioners that are older than 15 years often have problems similar to those we discussed above. Consult with a professional about whether or not it’s a good idea to install a new system. You might be much better off by installing a new air conditioner this summer.
